Arkalgud Sampathkumar

 

Internationally recognized expert in surgery for heart valve disease, particularly for Rheumatic heart disease. He has established heart surgery at a high altitude in Leh(Ladakh,11400 ft above MSL).

 

After MBBS from Bangalore Medical College, he specialized in Surgery(M.S.) and Cardiothoracic Surgery (M.Ch.) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He then joined the faculty in 1978 and served in various capacities. He spent a year in Milwaukee, the USA, for training in cardiac surgery. He retired in 2009 as Head of Department and Chief of Cardiothoracic Centre, AIIMS. He continued to perform surgery in private for another ten years at the Max Hospital in Ghaziabad. He has performed over 15000 heart surgeries, including valve repairs, replacement with mechanical, Tissue, homograft and autograft valves, congenital heart defects and Coronary surgery. He is highly recognized for his teaching and Academic Mentorship and trained nearly 100 students. He has many prestigious Orations and Awards. He has travelled worldwide to demonstrate his surgical techniques and his many innovative surgeries. He has authored many textbooks and published more than 200 articles on the subject. He has published a book on Patient’s rights. He produced 33 surgical videos for teaching and two E-learning modules and Musings of a heart surgeon in Once upon a heartbeat.
